Motherwell v Aberdeen preview – Three points for Dons at Fir Park tonight
Can the Dons keep the pressure on second-placed Rangers with a win in Motherwell tonight
December 23rd, 2016
The Dons are falling behind in the race for runners-up position in the Scottish Premiership and whilst it is extremely unlikely that anyone can catch Celtic as they storm once again towards the Scottish title, the fight for second place could go down to the wire but only if Aberdeen get back to winning ways.
The Dons lost 2-1 to Rangers earlier this month, this signalling a downturn in fortunes for the Pittodrie outfit, however they bounced back from this in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 demolition of Kilmarnock in their next outing although they have since managed just a solitary point from their subsequent two Premiership matches with the side trailing second-placed Rangers by some seven points.
The Dons do enjoy a game-in-hand over the Glasgow giants but they need to put this to good use tonight when they go head-to-head with Motherwell at their Fir Park ground. Indeed Aberdeen’s defeat to Ross County at Victoria park made it two away defeats on the bounce and they will be anxious to avoid a third in Lanarkshire this evening.
Mark McGhee’s Motherwell have failed to win any of their last four matches and despite managing seven points from their previous four home matches they sit a mere two points above rock-bottom side Partick Thistle as they head into tonight’s fixture. The Steelmen’s only defeat at Fir Park during this time was a 4-3 reversal to table-topping Celtic in which the visitors had to fight their way back from behind twice.
Tonight we’ll be siding with Aberdeen to seal the three points. McGhee’s side have been pretty poor against sides in the top half of the table and we see no reason to believe that things will be any different at Fir Park. Indeed with the Steelmen failing to score in all-but-four of their last nine Premiership outings, we’ll be backing the visitors to win-to-nil at a very reasonable 21/10.
