Millwall v Charlton Athletic preview – Mid-table clash will see spoils shared at Den
Millwall and Charlton Athletic will fight our a bore draw on Wednesday evening
December 19th, 2016
Charlton Athletic’s 2015/16 season was fraught with disappointment and following their eventual relegation to League One there was at least some optimism that they stay in the third tier of English football would be a very brief one.
Nevertheless the Addicks find themselves in a pretty unimpressive mid-table position as we approach the season’s mid-way point and the first south-east London derby of the season will see them lock horns with a Millwall side which sit level on 28 points with Karl Robinson’s men.
The stark fact is that Charlton have failed to win any of their last five competitive fixtures and whilst they have enjoyed some notable wins – not least the 5-1 demolition of Bristol Rovers last month – they have otherwise been utterly inconsistent, especially away from the Valley where they have managed only two league wins since the start of the season. Not the sort of form which would suggest an immediate return to the Championship.
Nevertheless they will be confident of managing something from this week’s clash with a Millwall side which have managed just a solitary point from their last two games at the Den. Indeed the Lions head into this midweek clash on the back of a 3-0 hammering at Scunthorpe United and whilst Neil Harris’ men have conceded just twice in their last four League One games at home, they will struggle to keep a clean sheet against a Chalrton Athletic side which scored in all-but-one of their six matches throughout November.
The Addicks have found the net just once since the start of December however and this match is hardly going to be a classic although it should prove to be a tightly fought affair which will determine whether either side can move into the top half of the League One table ahead of the Christmas period.
