Manchester United may be winless in their previous five games, however they have a great chance to return it winning ways when they face Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

If only it were so easy. It hardly needs saying that the Premier League season has been full of surprises so far. Who could have predicted that a managerless Chelsea would have been sitting a single point above the bottom three at this stage of the campaign? Who could have believed that Leicester City would’ve been sitting two points clear in pole position? Who could have thought that Bournemouth would be heading towards Christmas with recent wins over Manchester United and Chelsea under their belts.

The result against the Red Devils put a large dent in United’s title ambitions, however they aren’t they only side in the top six which have suffered setbacks in the first part of the campaign. The fact remains that United have failed to grab themselves a single win in their last five games, their last victory coming against Watford in November.

Of the four English representatives in this season’s Champions League, the Red Devils were alone in failing to secure for themselves a place in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition. With this in mind, failure to keep apace with the Premier League title contenders could spell the end for an under-fire Louis van Gaal.

One could argue that a victory over a struggling Canaries side should be a mere formality, especially so given that Norwich are securely in the relegation zone. That very same point could’ve been argued against Bournemouth last weekend however and we all know what the outcome of that match was.

The thing is, United aren’t at their best at the moment. They are far from it in fact and much of the blame can be placed squarely at the feet of the manager and his somewhat negative approach of late. Let’s face it, United aren’t great to watch this season are they? Recent victories over West Brom, Watford and CSKA aside, they haven’t been in the least bit convincing and with two defeats and three draws from their last five outings, we won’t be backing them to seal the three points this weekend.

Indeed, the Canaries may be in the relegation zone, however they have been enjoying some slightly better results than tomorrow’s opponents with a win, two draws and two defeats in their last five outings. There is little to suggest that they can’t get something from this match, although one shouldn’t forget that United have been particularly solid at Old Trafford this season with no defeats on home turf, bar a Capital One Cup defeat on penalties to Middlesbrough. Bet365 go 15/2 for a Norwich City win on Saturday.

That isn’t to say that both sides can’t get something from this fixture, although neither team will be enjoying a maximum points haul. United are far from their best so far this term and following draws at home to Man City, PSV and West Ham recently, we’ll be backing them to draw with Norwich City at odds of 7/2 with Paddy Power.
