We can forgive the Old Trafford faithful  for believing that this could actually be their season. We’re not so convinced however, although the side do have a perfect record after just two Premier League matches with two albeit unconvincing victories.

Following a midweek 3-1 win over Brugge in the Champions League, can United make it four on the bounce in all competitions at the expense of the Magpies on Saturday lunchtime?  It is perhaps a question which hardly needs answered, given that Newcastle have effectively started where they left off at the end of the previous campaign.

A decent enough 2-2 draw with Southampton saw them clinch a point in their opening match of the season, however this was followed by a dismal 2-0 defeat at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium and the long-suffering Newcastle fans are already resigned to at best an indifferent campaign and at worst a similar one to last season.

It could be worse. They could be in the Championship. They came dangerously close to the drop only a few short months ago and they need a dramatic improvement should they wish to stay clear of this threat once again. We can’t really see where this improvement might come from and it won’t miraculously appear at Old Trafford this weekend.

Indeed, a Manchester United win would lift them eight points clear of reigning Premier League champions Chelsea and what better incentive is there for clinching the three points on Saturday. The question is, will Newcastle offer much resistance?

We don’t imagine so to be honest. The Magpies have a miserable away record since the turn of the year with no wins on the road since January. Their killer instinct has long been absent and this looks set to be the case at Old Trafford this weekend, therefore we expect the Red Devils to grab themselves all three points with a clean sheet into the bargain.

Following his goalscoring exploits on Tuesday evening when he scored twice against Brugge, Memphis Depay will be in high spirits and is our choice on the anytime goalscorer market to increase his tally against a hapless Newcastle United side.
