Manchester United v Middlesbrough Tips – No surprises at Old Trafford tonight
It will be business as usual for Manchester United when they host Championship side Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup tonight
October 28th, 2015
A certain amount of inconsistency has crept into Manchester United’s season, although they are nevertheless only two points behind leaders Manchester City and Arsenal following a decent start to the season. A 3-0 defeat to Arsenal earlier this month was undoubtedly a setback, however the Red Devils bounced immediately back with a 3-0 hammering of Everton and subsequent draws against CSKA Moscow and Manchester City and tonight’s Capital One Cup clash with Middlesbrough at Old Trafford should in theory be a mere formality.
We saw a shock for Sheffield Wednesday when they defeated Arsenal at Hillsborough last night, however we’re not anticipating anything remotely similar in Manchester tonight. The Red Devils haven’t lost to ‘Boro in their last ten meetings since 2005, winning six times and drawing four and we expect that another victory will be added to that record in front of the Old Trafford fans.
Manchester United are looking serious Premier League contenders this season and despite manager Louis van Gaal making it clear that the Premier League is his priority, he will still be determined to secure some silverware sooner than later and this competition presents him with the ideal opportunity to do just that.
United famously exited this tournament to MK Dons at the second round stage last season before being knocked out by Sunderland in the semis, therefore a point is there to be made tonight.
United have been impressive at home this term and defensively they are particularly solid on home turf, conceding just twice with five clean sheets across all competitions. Should they produce another top-level performance, they should have little trouble in booking a place in the next round.
That’s not to suggest that Van Gaal’s side will have it all their own way. Middlesbrough will be full of confidence following their win against Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup and they will be eager to prove that they will cope with United’s quality as they look to return to the top flight.
United have nevertheless been excellent at home this term and although the visitors will provide them with a tough challenge tonight, the hosts will have enough to sweep past their Championship opponents and into the last eight of the Capital One Cup.
