Manchester United v FC Midtjylland tips – United can’t be backed with confidence
Manchester United must win on Thursday in order to stay in the Europa League
February 24th, 2016
This is a hugely important match for both Louis van Gaal and Manchester United. Defeat or a draw would see the Red Devils exit Europe without as much as a whimper and would likely cost Louis van Gaal his job.
Either way, many pundits expect that Van Gaal will be gone at the end of the season, however many are predicting that he will be leaving for pastures new before the end of the campaign. Indeed, had United lost to Shrewsbury in the FA Cup earlier this week, Van Gaal would probably have gone by now and any further slip-ups surely won’t be tolerated by the club hierarchy.
A 2-1 defeat to Premier League strugglers Sunderland was pretty bad but worse was to follow with United losing by the same scoreline to a team against which they were expected to dominate. Memphis Depay’s goal pushed the Red Devils into the lead against Midtjylland in Denmark last week but the hosts came back with goals from Pione Sisto and Ebere Paul Onuachu to secure a shock win for the Danish outfit.
“The fans can criticise,” Van Gaal said following the embarrassing defeat. “They can do it because when you see the second half, maybe they are right. We have to improve and then the fans shall support us again. All the players want to perform in an excellent way. It is not a case of attitude. We were not winning the second balls – that is my analysis.”
That result saw Van Gaal’s price slashed to just 4/5 with BetVictor to be the next managerial casualty in the Premier League and should the Dutchman wish to keep his job, then he must hope that his men can emerge victorious on Thursday evening.
United are 1/3 with Bet365 to qualify for the next round and 1/4 with the same firm to win on Thursday, however we can’t trust United to complete the job tonight. This is a side which have been extremely inconsistent since the start of the season and we’ll be avoiding the outright winner market like the plague.
Instead, we’ll be going for Both Teams to Score at odds of 6/4 with William Hill. The Red Devils need to attack from the very start and we do expect them to score. Similarly, we expect the visitors to also score against a United defence which have been less than solid of late. Indeed, Midtjylland have proven that they can get past Van Gaal’s men on the break and we expect them to do just that.
We’ll also be backing Over 2.5 goals at 7/10 with 888sport, given that five of United’s last six games have involved at least three goals. United’s two-goal requirement means that they will be scrapping for goals, therefore we’ll be backing a few at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
