Manchester United v CSKA Moscow Tips – Russians pose a danger at Old Trafford
The Red Devils will target the first of two home wins which could be enough to send them through to the Champions League knockout stages
November 3rd, 2015
This is the reverse fixture of United’s trip to Moscow two weeks ago, that match finishing 1-1 with Anthony Martial equalising for the visitors in the second half to rescue a point.
Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson used to target ten points in the group stages and current boss Louis van Gaal could steer his side to that magic number by beating their Russian opponents at Old Trafford this evening as well as a win against PSV Eindhoven in their next European outing.
Nevertheless, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and instead focus on tonight’s match. CSKA caused no end of problems when they last visited Old Trafford, enjoying a 3-1 lead for most of the second half in 2009 with a point salvaged for the home side thanks to a Paul Scholes goal and an own-goal.
Leonid Slutsky’s side enjoy their trips to Manchester and will hope to emulate their success at the Etihad Stadium last season where they beat Manchester City to the tune of 2-1.
It is perhaps something of a concern to the Red Devils fans that their side has only managed to grind out a couple of goal-less draws in their last two home games in ninety minutes, failing to score even in extra time against Championship opponents Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup last week and ultimately losing in a penalty shoot-out.
European games present United with different types of challenges however and we expect them to meet these head-on tonight. Their Champions League matches have been more open and we’ll be expecting an entertaining contest which will give us more of an insight into their chances of progression in the tournament.
