The Citizens are a mere two games away from the Champions League final but given that these matches are against the might of Real Madrid, there is clearly still a massive mountain to climb.

Manchester City aren’t a European giant by any means and they are very much in uncharted territory having never reached the Champions League quarter-finals before. Nevertheless, they knocked out French side PSG in that round of the competition to find themselves in the last four. Can Pellegrini’s side cause another surprise by beating Real Madrid over the two legs of this round? Manager Manuel Pellegrini thinks so.

“We can be the best team in Europe,” he said after the win against PSG. “Every year we receive a lot of criticism for different reasons but we are improving and I’m sure that the target of this club is to win the Champions League. I know we can reach that target. Of course we can do it this season, if you are in the semi-finals you have to play the best teams in Europe but I believe we can do it.”

The semi-finals were always going to throw up a tough draw for City, however with Barcelona already out of the competition it was Real Madrid who City would have been best avoiding. The La Liga side stormed back from 2-0 down against Wolfsburg in the last eight to ultimately win 3-2 on aggregate, hardly a surprise then that Real are favourites to win on Tuesday evening at 6/4 with 888sport.

Should City wish to reach the final, they desperately need to win at the Etihad and while they undoubtedly enjoy some decent current form, they haven’t met anyone of the same calibre as Real Madrid. Also, City have been far from their best at home while Real have suffered just a solitary away defeat in their last eleven games on the road. With that in mind, we’ll be backing them on the Double Chance market with Ladbrokes going 4/9 on Real Madrid-Draw.

These odds clearly won’t make you rich but they should provide some return, however a more generous option is backing Cristiano Ronaldo at Evens with William Hill on the Anytime Goalscorer market. The Portuguese player has managed an amazing 47 goals this season with sixteen of these coming in the Champions League. We’ll be surprised if he doesn’t add to this tally on Tuesday evening.
