Manchester City v Chelsea tips: Blues to avoid defeat at Etihad
A clash between the top two promises much in the way of excitement on Saturday. Let's hope we're not disappointed
December 2nd, 2016
Chelsea are the Premier League’s in-form side at the moment, of that there can be little doubt. Antonio Conte’s men bounced back from back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal by embarking upon a seven-game winning run which has lifted them into pole position in the Premier League. No less than nineteen goals were scored during that time with just one conceded and unsurprisingly confidence in the Blues camp will be pretty high.
The media may be all over Chelsea but Conte is having none of it, instead calling for calm as he prepares his side for this weekend’s showdown at the Etihad Stadium.
“If we were the same team [as we were] against Arsenal and Liverpool, today we lose the game for sure,” Conte insisted. “We have another type of confidence. We are working a lot and I’m pleased for the players – they enjoy this type of football. It’s not right [to talk about the Premier League title] because we have to improve a lot and we have a long way in front of us. It’s important to stay humble, to continue to work, to trust in our work, above all after this type of game.”
The Chelsea boss is spot-on with this assessment and with the Blues ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool by just a solitary point heading into the next round of fixtures, the situation could completely change should Conte’s men not have things entirely their own way on Saturday afternoon.
Pep Guardiola’s City are also enjoying some excellent form and head into Saturday’s home match on the back of a six-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. They have nevertheless been far from their best on home turf with their last three Etihad outings in the top flight ending in 1-1 draws.
Can they put this unimpressive home form behind them when they face the Premier League leaders this weekend? The bookmakers certainly believe so with most firms going 6/5 on a City victory, however the hosts haven’t been racking up many clean sheets of late and the less-than-solid defence will struggle against free-scoring Diego Costa and an in-form Eden Hazard.
Chelsea are having few problems at the back with clean sheets in all-but-one of their last six Premier League outings and as such we certainly fancy their chances of managing something from their journey north. Nevertheless given that Chelsea failed their only real test of the season to date when they lost 3-0 at Arsenal, we’ll be playing it safe and going for Chelsea to avoid defeat this weekend.
The Blues should get themselves amongst the goals however and this naturally leads us onto Diego Costa. The Spaniard struggled with injuries last season and managed a ‘mere’ twelve goals throughout the whole campaign, however his tally stands at ten since the start of 2016/17 and he represents excellent value at 7/4 with Unibet to add to this tally with a goal or two at the Etihad this weekend.
