Liverpool might have narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season although their reward for second place was an automatic spot in the Champions League group stages.

Brendan Rodgers clearly intends to treat this competition with the utmost of respect and actually rested Raheem Sterling against Aston Villa on Saturday ahead of Tuesday’s match against Ludogorets.

‘We have an exciting couple of months and this was a game I felt we could do that,’ Rodgers said, explaining the omission of Sterling.

‘If he didn’t have international football then it would have been the case. He is a big player for us but we have built a squad here where I have to trust all the players but as a team and a squad we didn’t deliver. He will certainly play on Tuesday night.’

‘We had new players against Tottenham (whom they beat 3-0 before the international break) and we were outstanding,’ he said.

‘The players we have brought in are very good players and I am delighted with them but we just failed to open them (Villa) up.

‘We just lacked that bit of quality. We have seen many games here where we ended up with 15-20 shots on target but that didn’t happen.’

Ludogorets are a Bulgarian side who came through the play-off stage in dramatic fashion when beating Steaua Bucharest on penalties, having previously knocked Partizan out of the competition.

Bet365 offer odds of 2/9 about a Liverpool win and the re-introduction of Sterling should help the Reds to a comfortable victory, with the England man a 7/5 chance to find the net.

Rickie Lambert might enjoy a rare start for his new club, while Adam Lallana will also get another chance to demonstrate why the Merseyside club splashed the cash.

Liverpool can also use this game to tighten up defensively and BetVictor go 10/11 about a Reds win to nil.
