Liverpool v Everton betting tips – Toffees defeat on the cards
Liverpool can give Klopp a winning derby debut
April 20th, 2016
The Reds host Everton at Anfield this evening for Jurgen Klopp’s debut Merseyside derby match and we’ll be backing the hosts to seal the three points.
These sides last met when Brendan Rodgers was in the Liverpool hot-seat and the spoils were shared on that occasion with the match ending in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park. This result cost Rodgers his job and with Klopp now in charge, the Reds have returned impressive victories over Manchester United, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp would clearly relish the prospect of a win over arch-rivals Everton and we believe that this will prove to be the case when the sides clash this evening.
“It’s very exciting,” Klopp is reported as saying to the Liverpool Echo. “It’s important too. Derbies are always difficult to play because you have to handle the pressure. There’s no advantage or disadvantage for either side. For me, I like these special games. I’ve been a manager since 2001. That’s 15 years and each game is important. But with special games like this it’s different.”
Clearly, form can count for very little in derby matches, however one can’t really ignore the fact that the Reds have been enjoying some excellent results of late with just a single defeat in their last eight Premier League outings. Given that Everton have returned just one win in their last eight top-flight matches, we feel that the pressure will be further piled upon boss Martinez’s shoulders tonight.
I understand why there has been unrest,” Martinez said. “Our results at home haven’t been anywhere near where we have wanted. But we have a very tight group [of players] and everybody is desperate to be on the pitch to help the side. This could be an incredibly positive place this time next week. That’s what we are fighting for. We have that in our side.”
Victory over the Reds would ease the pressure on the Toffees boss, however we won’t be backing Everton to manage anything for their troubles tonight. Liverpool haven’t tasted defeat in their last ten matches and will be in confident mood following their thrilling 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund in their Europa League quarter-final second-leg match last week. Indeed, Liverpool are 4/6 with BetVictor to triumph tonight and while these odds may not seem too generous, we believe that they will return you some winnings.
The Reds may not have things all their own way and the visiting fans should have a goal to cheer at the very least. As such, backing Liverpool to win and both teams to score looks a decent bet at 11/4 with Ladbrokes. The Toffees have had few problems finding the goal away from Goodison Park and with the Reds conceding in nine of their last eleven games in all competitions, we expect to see the goal net bulge a few times tonight.
Clearly this means also going for Over 2.5 goals at 8/13 with Coral, while another option which appeals is backing Divock Origi on the Anytime Goalscorer market at 6/4 with Paddy Power. Origi has banged in nine goals for the Reds this season and despite missing training on Monday it has been confirmed that he will be fully fit for tonight’s clash. Klopp has hinted that he may not start Sturridge this evening and should this be the case, we’d recommend backing the 21-year-old to find the back of the net.
