On paper it should be so easy – The Reds can secure their place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup by beating League Two outfit Carlisle United. If only it were that easy.

The Merseysiders have made a poor start to the Premier League campaign and head into this match on the back of a winless run stretching back four matches. Is Brendan Rodgers feeling the pressure? You bet he is!

With any faint title aspirations flickering out, this competition presents the side with a chance of silverware and the eight-time League Cup winners can renew their past love-affair with the tournament.

The visiting Cumbrians will have other ideas however and will be aiming to pull off a huge upset. With seventeen goals to their name, Carlisle United are the top scorers in the whole of the Football League although their attacking approach has led to them conceding the exact same number of goals.

Nevertheless, given that they dumped QPR out of the competition in the last round, they will head to Anfield tomorrow night with no fear whatsoever. Top scorer Jabo Ibehre has grabbed himself ten goals in all competitions for the Cumbrians this season and will be hopeful of sending shock-waved around Anfield by adding to his goal-tally.

With Rodgers expected to make numerous changes to the side which was held to a 1-1 draw with Norwich City at the weekend, can a second-string Reds side dash the dreams of a 5,000 strong travelling support? Clearly they can, although that’s not to say that they actually will.

Carlisle have nothing to lose tomorrow evening and given that they can boast an incredible scoring record this season, we fancy them to upset the form book by holding the Premier League side to a draw in ninety minutes.
