There were several plaudits for Liverpool after winning 3-0 at White Hart Lane and it was admittedly an impressive performance against Tottenham, although that had been preceded by two unconvincing ones.

Liverpool scraped over the line when beating Southampton before crashing to a 3-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium and they will run late fitness tests on Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson, both of whom sustained injuries while on international duty.

With the Champions League starting up next week, it’s surely all about opposing a relatively new-look Liverpool side for whom Adam Lallana could make his debut, while Mario Balotelli is sure to receive a warm reception from the Kop.

Paddy Power offer odds of 3/10 about a home win although we just can’t get excited about the prospect of a Liverpool victory and there is a strong argument for opposing the Reds in some shape or form.

After all, Aston Villa are unbeaten so far this season after victories against Stoke City and Hull City sandwiched a goalless draw against Newcastle United and their defensive strength is there for all to see.

BetVictor go 11/1 about an away win for the Midlands side and Paul Lambert will consider this to be a good time to visit Anfield, with the Villans having landed a 2-2 draw in this fixture last season.

Ladbrokes offer 5/1 about the draw and there are too many question marks over the Liverpool squad to trust them at 3/10, with Aston Villa and the Draw available at 3/1 on the Double Chance market.
