It has certainly been an excellent week for Leicester City with their Champions League debut returning a 3-0 win over Belgian side FC Brugge and a weekend win by the same scoreline over Burnley in the Premier League, new summer signing Islam Slimani scoring a brace in the latter match.

Can this excellent week be followed by another excellent result in Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup clash with Chelsea? One could assume that Leicester’s recent return to form is an indication of a revival of fortunes following their poor start to the campaign, however we’re not so sure. To be fair, Brugge and Burnley weren’t tough opponents in the slightest and Chelsea won’t be a pushover, that’s for sure.

Riyad Mahrez was highly influential in Leicester’s successive victories, however he will play no part in Tuesday’s EFL Cup action, the same applying to Slimani who will also be rested for this clash. Ranieri will be mindful that a full season of European and domestic football lies ahead for his side and he will be eager to avoid overstretching the squad.

The problem for Ranieri is that any replacements that he fields on Tuesday will be largely inferior to the players which are being rested and as such, the Foxes will struggle on Tuesday evening against a strong Chelsea side. Blues boss Antonio Conte will be only too aware that his side won’t be enjoying any European action and with Manchester City opening up a five point gap at the top of the Premier League, the two domestic cup competitions may provide him with the only chances of silverware this season.

Chelsea are 5/4 favourites with William Hill to win on Tuesday evening and this would appear to be the best option as regards betting on this match, given that Conte won’t be happy should one of his chances of adding to the Stamford Bridge trophy cabinet disappear at the King Power Stadium.
