Juventus and Real Madrid go head-to-head this weekend in the final of the 2017 Champions League and it seems fitting that this game sees what is arguably the best attacking line-up on the continent clash with the best defence.

This competition was introduced in its current ‘Champions League’ format some 25 years ago although not since its inception has a single side managed back-to-back European titles. Will this change this year?

Real Madrid have dominated this competition, especially in recent years with two European titles in the past three seasons. They have stormed through to the 2017 final in hugely impressive fashion with victories over Bayern Munich and arch-rivals Atletico Madrid although they will be in for a massive test by Serie A champions Juventus on Saturday evening.

The ‘Old Lady’ have secured their sixth successive ‘scudetta’, thus further cementing their dominance on the domestic scene, however they haven’t enjoyed the same success on the European circuit with their last Champions League title coming their way in 1995/96. They lost to Barcelona to the tune of 3-1 in the 2014/15 Final although we feel that they will go one better this weekend.

Indeed Juventus disposed of Barcelona at the quarter-final stage and succeeded in keeping the Catalans from finding the net both at home and at the Nou Camp. The big question is, can they hold tight against a Real Madrid attacking line-up which included the all-time top goalscorer in the European Cup/Champions League – Cristiano Ronaldo?

We believe that they can although we’ll be stopping short of backing Juventus to win in 90 minutes. Real Madrid will be a massive obstacle to overcome and whilst we believe that Juventus will possess the edge, we’ll be avoiding the Match Betting market and opting instead for Juventus to lift the trophy, whether they manage this via extra-time or even penalties.

Gonzalo Higuain should feature at some point of this match, the Argentinian enjoying an excellent first season with Juventus having banged in 32 goals across all competitions. Can he add a 33rd this weekend and send Juventus closer to the ultimate European prize? We believe so.
