Hull City have been down in the doldrums for quite some time now although the 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in their first outing of 2017 was too much for the club’s board to bear and Mike Phelan was unceremoniously shown the door.
Given that the Tigers ended the year by securing a valuable point at home to Everton, it was hoped that the side could build upon this and make a good start to the new year. Disappointment was bound to follow and so it proved, therefore the hunt is now on for someone to perform what many would consider a minor miracle by keeping Hull City in the top flight.
Is it achievable? It certainly is and with only three points separating the Tigers from safety as things stand, it only needs a couple of good results to lift them out of the bottom three, depending of course on other results.
Who will they turn to? That is the key question although Marco Silva looks a realistic candidate judging by the fact that his odds have fallen from 12/1 to just 1/6, a clear indication that there has been a huge flurry of interest for the former Olympiakos boss.
Silva has been out of work since leaving the Greek side during the summer months and despite being linked to other clubs including Wolverhampton Wanderers, there are many who feel that he would be ideally placed to turn around Hull’s fortunes. Does it really matter that he speaks limited English and has no experience of English football? It would appear not!
Alan Pardew was an early frontrunner after his recent sacking by Crystal Palace as was Gary Rowett who was surprisingly dismissed by Birmingham City although at odds of 22/1 and 7/1 respectively they are very much outsiders.
