Hammers to get their revenge over Astra Giurgiu tonight
Revenge will be sweet for West Ham when they travel to Romania in tonight's Europa League qualifier
August 18th, 2016
Astra knocked West Ham out of this very competition just last year and with 188 teams taking part in this season’s Europa League, it is a remarkable coincidence to see these sides paired again in the tournament. It nevertheless provides Slaven Bilic’s men with a chance to exact their revenge for that disappointment and move into the group stages of Europe’s second-tier competition.
The Romanians managed to hold the Hammers to a 2-2 draw at the Boleyn Ground last season before knocking the Premier League side out of the tournament thanks to a 2-1 win in the second leg. Astra continued their domestic season in a similar vein, winning the Romanian title and clinching for themselves a place in this season’s Champions League qualifiers.
West Ham also enjoyed an excellent season with some notable wish on the road against the main title challengers, however they won’t have things their own way in Romania tonight.
Astra find themselves in this competition having lost 4-1 to Copenhagen in their opening Champions League qualifier and whilst they managed just a single point from their opening three league games, they appear to have found their feet of late and head into this clash on the back of a 3-1 home win against Timisoara.
The Hammers didn’t enjoy the best start to their European adventure with a 2-1 away defeat to Domzale although they made amends by defeating the Slovenian outfit 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium in the second leg. A 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in their opening Premier League was hardly a disgrace and whilst Bilic’s men lost their three previous away games in European competition, we feel that they will edge tonight’s encounter.
Bilic may have a list of injuries to worry about and we believe that Astra can get themselves onto the scoresheet, however we’ll be backing the Hammers to do the business in Romania this evening.
