FK Trakai v St Johnstone Preview & Tips
St Johnstone are one foot out of the Europa League but can they turn things around on Thursday evening?
July 4th, 2017
St Johnstone finished fourth in the 2016/17 Scottish Premiership and their reward is a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League although things didn’t get off to a great start in their opening match, the Saints going down 2-1 to Lithuanian outfit FK Trakai at MacDiarmid Park last week. They now have a mountain to climb in order to salvage something from this two-legged tie and the bookies are far from confident of the Perth side’s chances with some firms going as low as 1/4 on Trakai to progress into the second qualifying round.
The Lithuanian side opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute at MacDiarmid Park with Maksimov finding the back of the net although St Johnstone equalised eighteen minutes later thanks to Shaughnessy. The visitors regained the lead before the interval and that proved to be the winner in the first leg clash.
St Johnstone’s European adventure now hangs by a thread with the side needing at least two goals in the reverse fixture on Thursday evening. We wouldn’t be shocked were this to happen although we’re going to avoid the outright winner market and instead will look at backing Both Teams to Score. FK Trakai have had few problems in front of goal in recent outings but they have been less than solid at the back and this will give the Saints a glimmer of hope as they look to keep their European adventure alive on Thursday evening.
