FC Midtjylland v Southampton Tips – A tough assignment for the Saints in Denmark
Can the Saints squeeze past FC Midtjylland on their way to the Europa League group stages?
August 26th, 2015
It was tough going for Ronald Koeman’s side in the first leg of this Europa League qualifying play-off at St Mary’s and their Danish opponents hold the advantage with a crucial away goal in the 1-1 draw last week.
That’s not to say that the Saints are dead and buried – far from it. This is their first European campaign since 2003 and they will be in no mood to wave goodbye to it just yet. They put on a convincing performance in the previous round with a 5-0 aggregate win over Vitesse Arnhem and Koeman has made clear his ambition of bringing some silverware to St Mary’s this season. This competition could provide him with the chance to do that.
It may be a huge ask, however they would take a huge step towards that goal with a win over their Danish opponents on Thursday evening. Midtjylland have fallen at this stage of the competition in each of the past two seasons and it won’t be third time lucky for them this term.
The Danes may be flying high in the domestic league with 14 points from their opening six games sending them to pole position, however they have been held to a draw in each of their last three outings in all competitions and we’re expecting a ‘backs to the wall’ approach against the Saints as the Premier League side seek that all-important opening goal.
The first leg proved to be a tight and cautious affair and we expect this match to be little different with under 2.5 goals being the clear-cut betting option for us.
Southampton’s start to the season has been no picnic, although a win on Thursday could kick-start their Premier League campaign and Koeman’s men clearly possess the quality required for victory in this competition.
