September 17th, 2014
The winner of this season’s Europa League will go into next season’s Champions League and it’s not something lost on Roberto Martinez, with the Spaniard hoping to steer Everton to the knockout stages of the competition and beyond.
“Everton has to be in Europe” said Martinez, who feels that this season’s campaign will be part of a good learning curve.
“When I speak to the fans they have great memories of what they’ve done in Europe.
“We have to work on a daily basis to get their consistently.
“It is a priority for us.
“I do feel maybe we were not ready for Champions League football, even though we fought hard to get into the top four.
“Realistically we need to see how well we can do in the Europa League to see if one day we can get into the Champions League.
“I do believe in process and progress and it’s the perfect next step for us to assess the squad and see how we react to playing in the Europa League.
“It is a very important step for us and we really want to go all the way in the Europa League.
“We’re excited because I do feel that playing against German teams, French teams, and Russian teams will bring a completely different tactical approach and we will benefit from that.”
Everton are a 23/20 chance with Sky Bet to claim victory on Thursday night and Wolfsburg have struggled in their first few games this season, losing against Bayern Munich before drawing with Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim.
The Toffees only won their first game of the season on Saturday when triumphing at West Brom, although the 2-2 draw with Arsenal and the 6-3 reverse against Chelsea didn’t tell the full story.
Muhamed Besic might command a first team place for this encounter, with Darron Gibson and Leon Osman also bidding to be involved, with Martinez looking to get early points on the board.
Wolfsburg are a 27/10 chance with bet365 to win on Merseyside, having finished fifth in the Bundesliga last term, with Kevin de Bruyne and Ivica Olic among the star names in the team.
