Everton v Liverpool tips: Goodison win for Reds tonight
Liverpool will be looking for their first win at Goodison Park for five years tonight. We think that they will get it
December 19th, 2016
Jurgen Klopp will hardly forget his first Merseyside derby. Liverpool ran riot against Everton in their second meeting last season with Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Mamadou Sakho and Divock Origi each finding the net in a 4-0 victory. Can Klopp’s men manage another comfortable win this evening?
Liverpool haven’t been winners at Goodison Park for some time now and whilst they have been unbeaten at the home of their fiercest rivals in the last five visits, they haven’t triumphed since October 2011 when Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez fired them into a 2-0 victory. Indeed another draw wouldn’t be a disaster for either side although the Reds will be anxious top close the gap between themselves and table-topping Chelsea, currently standing at some nine points.
The Reds suffered a downturn in form earlier this month when they went down 4-3 to Bournemouth and could only manage a 2-2 draw with West Ham. They nevertheless bounced back with an emphatic mid-week 3-0 win over Middlesbrough in their last outing and they will certainly provide Everton with tough opposition tonight.
The Toffees will be in buoyant mood following their 2-1 win over Arsenal last week although whilst the pressure will have been eased from Everton boss Ronald Koeman, we don’t envisage his side upsetting another title-contender this evening.
The Toffees may have sealed the three points against the Gunners last week but they were far from convincing. Mesut Ozil wasted a chance for Arsenal in the second half and we don’t believe that Liverpool will be so wasteful tonight given that they have already banged in 40 Premier League goals this season with half of these coming away from Anfield. Indeed the Reds have been strong on the road with wins at Chelsea and Arsenal, therefore we’ll be backing them to put their Goodison frustrations to one side tonight and secure for themselves local bragging rights.
As for goalscorers, we recommend backing Divock Origi to fire the Reds into the lead tonight. The Belgian found the net at Middlesbrough last week and he has scored in each of his previous Liverpool appearances. He scored in the 4-0 hammering of Everton last season and he represents good value at 9/2 to break the deadlock this evening.
