Everton played Arsenal off the park home and away in the Premier League last season and look a reasonable bet to win Saturday evening’s game.
After all, while the Toffees had a full week of preparation following their 2-2 draw at Leicester last weekend, Arsenal headed to Turkey to claim a goalless draw in the Champions League against Besiktas.
Roberto Martinez sniffs blood although admits that Everton will always be regarded as underdogs until they sustain the sort of form that will elevate them into the top four.
He said: “It doesn’t surprise me because they are a team that got into the Champions League positions and have been doing it for many years. We’ve got to earn that respect.
“I don’t think just one season when we did well in two games against them can give you an outcome in that respect.
“What we have in our favour is that we are sill hurt after dropping two points at the weekend,” he said. “I like that. It shows our standards and that we don’t accept second best.
“What we want is to look at the game against Arsenal as an opportunity to be as good as we can be. Arsenal have signed well in the summer.
“They’ve brought in players who fit into their style of playing very well and I don’t think it’s a big surprise to have them considered as one of the biggest forces not just in English football but on a European front.
“Saturday is a big challenge but we’re ready to face it head on.”
Everton are marginal outsiders at odds of 9/5 and have to contend without Ross Barkley who will be sidelined for several more weeks, although Romelu Lukaku destroyed the Arsenal defence with his running last term.
