Dundee United v Hamilton Academical Preview and Tips
Will it be Premier League for Dundee United next season? Not if Hamilton Academical have anything to do with it.
May 22nd, 2017
Dundee United haven’t enjoyed the success which they had hoped for in the Championship this season, given that their ultimate aim was a swift return back to the Scottish Premiership via the automatic promotion place. Nevertheless they have still enjoyed a decent enough campaign and now sit just two games away from a return to the top-flight once again, however can they give themselves a first-leg advantage when they welcome Hamilton Academical to Tannadice on Thursday in their two-legged play-off?
Ray McInnon’s side finished the season in third position in the Scottish Championship, however they enjoyed some excellent form towards the end of their campaign with a seven-game unbeaten run prior to their 5-1 aggregate win over Greenock Morton in their first play-off tie. They followed this by despatching Falkirk to the tune of 4-3, however they will face their hardest challenge yet when they lock horns with Premiership side Hamilton Academical on Thursday evening.
For their part, Accies have struggled in the Scottish top-flight this season and finished the campaign with just a single point separating them from relegated Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Their regular season was concluded with an impressive 4-0 thrashing of Dundee last weekend however and we would imagine that the visitors to Tannadice this week will be brimming with confidence.
Is that confidence misplaced? This will certainly be a closely-fought match but one shouldn’t forget United’s form at Tannadice this season. The Tangerines have lost just once on home soil this season – this being against champions Hibernian – and whilst Accies have shown signs of improvement towards the end of the season, we believe that the hosts will gain an advantage ahead of the second-leg at New Douglas Park.
