Crystal Palace were set to appoint Malky Mackay as permanent manager on Wednesday although the deal has fallen through and the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Tim Sherwood have ruled themselves out of taking the position.

It’s still startling that Tony Pulis has been allowed to leave the club based on the excellent job he did last season, with the Welshman now among the favourites to actually be reinstated at Selhurst Park.

Even so, it is Keith Millen who takes charge of the first team for Saturday’s game and Palace are slight favourites at 6/4 with bet365 to claim their first points of the season.

“We do need to bring in some players and the days are counting down” said Millen. “That’s why it’s important that we do our homework, like we have all summer, and try to continue with a list of names that will enhance what we’re doing.

“We have got a decent squad but need to bring in two or three that are going to give real competition for the starting XI. It’s not a major change.

“The lads know that it’s no reflection on them,” said Millen. “They’ve done nothing wrong. It’s not affected their confidence. Not knowing is probably the hardest thing for the players and the staff, which direction the chairman and the club want to go in and who is going to come in”.

The Eagles did pretty well at the Emirates Stadium last week and were a whisker away from claiming a point against Arsenal, although a week of upheaval might do no favours to a group of players who were expecting to meet a new manager this week.

West Ham will be looking to take advantage, with William Hill offering 2/1 about an away victory at Selhurst Park. The Hammers were also unlucky losers against Spurs last weekend when missing a penalty and several gilt-edged chances to beat Tottenham.

The stakes are high after these two defeats although a low-scoring encounter looks set to be on the cards.
