Chelsea v Sunderland betting tips – A must-win for the Blues
Can the Blues be backed with any confidence on Saturday afternoon?
December 17th, 2015
Could there be another shocker on the cards for Chelsea when they face Sunderland at Stamford Bridge this weekend?
We certainly aren’t ruling it out, given that the Blues have been utterly dreadful so far this season. They may be in the last sixteen of the Champions League and as such, victory over a struggling Sunderland side should be a certainty, however following defeats to both Leicester City and Bournemouth, anything is possible.
Not only that, Sunderland aren’t struggling quite as much as they were before the arrival of Sam Allardyce and they can pose the Chelsea rearguard no end of problems. Indeed, defeat to the Black Cats this weekend could lead to the unthinkable occurring – Chelsea in the bottom three.
With the Blues defending their title, the bookies are still optimistic that they can turn things around soon and as such, Mourinho’s men are as low as 1/3 with Paddy Power to clinch maximum points on Saturday. We’re not so sure however and with Chelsea winning just twice in their previous ten outings in the top flight against Norwich City and Aston Villa, we’re not anticipating an easy ride for the home side.
That said, Sunderland aren’t exactly faring much better, although the Wearsiders have thrown up some impressive wins recently, witness the 3-0 hammering of rivals Newcastle United in October and last month’s victories over both Stoke City and Crystal Palace, the former side achieving a double over Chelsea already this season thanks to a Premier League win and a Capital Cup victory on penalties.
Having spent much of last season fighting against relegation, they find themselves in very much the same position this season. That said, the Black Cats would appear to be on the up and a 3-1 defeat to high-flying Arsenal earlier in December wasn’t exactly a huge surprise. Their other two losses in their last five games have been by single goal margins and following the 6-2 hammering by Everton in November, things have become tighter at the back.
We don’t predict that Sunderland can head to Stamford Bridge and return home with the spoils in the bag on Saturday, however we also don’t reckon that Chelsea can make a return to winning ways against a slightly improving Black Cats outfit. The Blues will get their much needed win at some point, but we don’t see it happening at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
Sunderland are far from the finished article heading into this match and Chelsea are at a low ebb at present following defeats to Leicester City and Bournemouth, therefore we expect a scrappy affair which will finish with the spoils shared at Stamford Bridge. Back the draw at 9/2 with William Hill.
