Chelsea v Porto betting tips – Blues must avoid defeat tonight
Things are extremely tight heading into the final Group G match
December 9th, 2015
Of the four teams in Group G, any two of the top three could go through to the last sixteen of the Champions League. Chelsea may be sitting atop the group following a decent enough campaign so far, but they are level on points with Porto and just two above third-placed Dynamo Kiev.
Clearly, the winner of tonight’s match at Stamford bridge will be guaranteed a place in the knockout stage, however the loser would need to look anxiously at Kiev and desperately hope that they fail to beat Maccabi in the other group fixture.
Should Dynamo win and this match end in a draw, then Porto would finish third and drop down to the Europa League.
Mourinho will be facing a side which he steered to Champions League glory in 2003/04 and he will doubtless be looking to avenge his side’s 2-1 defeat earlier in this campaign.
Will Chelsea put their Premier League woes to one side tonight when they face the Portuguese side? Let’s hope so for Mourinho’s sake. The Blues boss is on a sticky wicket to say the least following an utterly dreadful Premier League campaign so far. Chelsea suffered their fourth top-flight defeat in six games when they went down 1-0 to Bournemouth at the weekend and the pressure is very much on Mourinho to turn things around rapidly.
He will have his work cut out against his former employers this evening, Porto starting their Champions League campaign in excellent fashion before suffering a surprise defeat to Dynamo a fortnight ago. They are also enjoying an excellent spell in the Portuguese top flight where they sit just two points adrift of top spot and manager Julen Lopetegui will be confident that he can steer the side in to the next stage of this competition for the second year running.
Going on Chelsea’s recent Premier League form, we feel that the Blues will miss out on qualification for next season’s Champions League via league position, therefore the emphasis will very much be on going all the way in Europe this season. They have looked more convincing in this tournament than their domestic campaign, especially at home and they should have the edge in this encounter, although we feel that they won’t be having things their own way. Assuming that he makes a start tonight, Diego Costa could provide us with the obvious choice of goalscorer this evening and he is good value at 9/5 with Ladbrokes to score anytime.
