Chelsea v Newcastle United betting preview – Blues set for home win
Three more points on the board for Chelsea this weekend
February 12th, 2016
Chelsea have yet to suffer defeat under the guidance of Guus Hiddink, however they haven’t exactly been setting the Premier League alight either since the departure of Jose Mourinho last year, especially at home.
Only Sunderland and League One side Scunthorpe have been beaten at Stamford Bridge during the temporary manager’s reign and a late strike from Spaniard Diego Costa was needed in order to salvage a point from their recent meeting with Manchester United.
Despite this, Hiddink remains positive about the performances of his side, even if they are failing to win games.
“I am happy with the reaction of the team,” The Dutchman said to the BBC after the draw with the Red Devils. “United did a good job in the first half and in the beginning of the second, they are not an easy team to beat. But we deserved a point. We dropped too far back after the first 20 minutes when they dominated us but later on we closed a little more. They made a beautiful goal – without good marking from our side – but after I think the team reacted very well.”
Hiddink may be pleased with his team’s performances, however the Stamford bridge faithful will be eager to see their side clinch a maximum points haul, especially against the Magpies. Newcastle United have spent big in the January transfer window as they battle against the drop to the Championship and they succeeded in bouncing back from successive defeats by winning against West Brom in their last game, however we don’t fancy their chances too much at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
Nevertheless, Chelsea’s home form has been a cause for concern with a mere four victories since the start of the season, although Newcastle United have been dire on the road with a mere seven points from their seven away games. Hardly a surprise then that Chelsea start as favourites at 4/9 with Coral.
These odds are clearly far from appealing, therefore better value must be sought. We don’t need to look too far however with Paddy Power offering a tempting 5/4 on the handicap market for Chelsea -1. The Magpies are struggling to score away from home and a couple of Chelsea goals should see the points stay at the Bridge.
Also seriously worthy of consideration is backing Diego Costa to score anytime at 10/11 with Ladbrokes. The player fired into the back of the Manchester United net last weekend to rescue a point for the Blues and with seven goals in his last nine outings, the Spaniard looks the best option to help the Blues on their way to a valuable win this weekend.
