Chelsea were apparently a “disgrace” according to their manager on Saturday although strange things happen when you decide to drop the majority of your first team.

Oscar and Gary Cahill are the only players who might retain their places for tonight’s clash against a Liverpool side who weren’t too clever themselves after Saturday’s goalless draw against Bolton.

Brendan Rodgers fielded a strong team for that match and won’t make many changes for this match although Steven Gerrard returns and will hope this isn’t the last League Cup game he plays in a red shirt.

Sadly, the odds are stacked against Liverpool following last week’s 1-1 draw and we expect Chelsea to run out the eventual winners, with John Terry, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa essentially the spine of the team.

Eden Hazard can produce the trickery to unlock the Liverpool defence, while the visitors might struggle to find the net. For all their pretty inter-passing, they don’t have someone who can put the ball in the net regularly and this game will be too early for Daniel Sturridge.

We’re expecting Chelsea to get the job done and there is a wealth of experience in their ranks when it comes to progressing in cup competitions, with Liverpool likely to run up against a blue wall.
