This is a must-win match, especially for Chelsea. An obvious comment perhaps but one which Jose Mourinho will surely share. The Blues’ season so far has been an unmitigated disaster. It hardly needs saying that any side which has stormed to the title one season and managed just four points from the first five games of the following campaign is experiencing a few problems.

What has gone wrong? It’s hard to say, however with Chelsea sitting a single point above the drop zone, things desperately need to go right. Their leaky defence and stuttering attack have cost them dearly and even though we’re only a few weeks into the season, their lack of invincibility has hugely boosted the confidence of any opponents who come their way.

A 4-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv will have given the side a modicum of confidence, however Arsenal are certain to provide much stiffer opposition this weekend and Mourinho will be demanding a similar ruthless display as that displayed on the European stage earlier this week.

Arsenal didn’t enjoy their midweek European outing quite as much, losing 2-1 to Dynamo Zagreb with Olivier Giroud being red-carded. Nevertheless, the Gunners sit fourth in the Premier League table and are undefeated since the first game of the season.

It is hard to say whether Wenger’s decision to effectively ignore the summer transfer window will pay dividends or not, although he will be confident of claiming a second successive win over the Blues following success in the Community Shield.

Arsenal have enjoyed a win in all but one of their last eight Premier League away games, however this could perhaps be a step too far. Chelsea will be desperate to return to winning ways, although much will clearly depend upon whether they can tighten things up at the back. Indeed, with the Blues conceding at least twice in each of their last five Premier League outings, the visitors will be confident of finding the back of the net.
