Celtic’s participation in this season’s Europa League looks set to conclude at Parkhead this evening when Ajax come to town.

It was always going to be a tough task for the Scottish champions, given that they were drawn in a very difficult group containing both Fenerbahce and Ajax.

Nevertheless, it has been Norwegian surprise package Molde who have caused the Hoops the most damage, beating the Glasgow side 3-1 in Norway and 2-1 at Celtic Park. Indeed, Molde have been a revelation after looking very much like a side purely making up the numbers in the group.

Nevertheless, with ten points to their name following three wins and a draw, the Norwegians have already qualified for the next round and it will be a scrap between the remaining three sides to see who will join them in the last 32 of the competition.

Celtic’s chances of progressing in the competition lie very much in the hands of their competitors, given that the Hoops sit firmly at the bottom of the group with just two points, one adrift of Ajax and three adrift of Fenerbahce. Boylesports go 8/5 for a Celtic win this evening.

Indeed, a victory for Fenerbahce tonight would finish Celtic’s hopes of further involvement in the tournament, although matters are still very much in Ajax’s hands and they will be desperate for the win which would still keep them in contention heading into the final group game.

There is very little to commend the Hoops against such strong opposition as Ajax, although manager Ronny Deila is still upbeat about his side’s chances in the final two group matches. We don’t share his optimism however. Indeed, with Celtic struggling to a 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock in their latest domestic outing, Ajax stormed to a 5-1 win in the Dutch Eredivisie and will be in very high spirits heading into this penultimate group game, therefore with odds of 19/10 on offer with William Hill for an Ajax win, we’ll be grabbing this with both hands tonight.
