Cameroon v Chile Preview & Tips
Will Cameroon rip-up the form book with a win over Chile or will it be business as usual for the South Americans?
June 14th, 2017
Chile have been pretty hit and miss as they head to Russia for their appearance in the FIFA Confederations Cup and with a 3-0 thrashing of Burkina Faso under their belts they were expected to dispose of Russia in a similar manner in their following international friendly. Nevertheless despite going a goal ahead, the Russians fought back to force a draw and Chile went on to surrender a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Romania in their last outing.
The South Americans therefore head into this competition on something of a downer, however can they put this firmly behind them and get off to a flying start in Russia on Sunday?
For their part, Cameroon have enjoyed some success of late with the side triumphing in the African Cup of Nations. They were without the services of some star-names such as Eric Choupo-Moting and Joel Matip, therefore weren’t fancied to go all the way in that competition. Nevertheless an excellent run in the tournament saw them line-up against Egypt in the final and they fought back from a goal down to run-in 2-1 winners.
Since then they have been a mixed bag with two defeats against Colombia and Guinea as well as two wins against Tunisia and Morocco. Coach Hugo Broos isn’t full of confidence for his side’s chances in Russia and he had this to say:
“I am someone who is realistic, who can put things in perspective. Apart from Russia, you are in with the seven best teams in the world because they are all champions of their continents, so you are at a very high level. This is why I think we have to start this tournament with modest expectations and try to get through the first round, which will be hard.”
Cameroon lost 4-0 to Colombia on home soil earlier this week and this will have dented confidence ahead of this weekend’s match. Chile may be far from their best at the moment but one will certainly fancy their chances given their abundance of top-quality talent within their ranks.
One such talent in Alexis Sanchez and we believe that he will play his part in a Chile victory by finding the back of the net. The Gunners player scored 24 times in the Premier League last season and we would be surprised were he not to add to the scoreline this weekend.
