Cambridge United v Oxford United tips – back the visitors to avoid defeat
Oxford are starting to improve under Michael Appleton and can a positive result on Saturday
October 9th, 2014
It has been five years since the last “Varsity” match between these two teams, with the famous university cities more adept at clashing oars during the annual Boat Race to meeting on the football field.
However, Cambridge United’s runaway title charge in the Conference last term means that they are back in the Football League and the bookies make them favourites to enjoy a Saturday victory in front of the Sky cameras.
William Hill offer a best price 13/8 about Richard Money’s men claiming victory, with the U’s having a mixed bag of results since getting promotion.
A 3-1 victory at Burton last Friday was probably their best performance of the campaign to date, with the Brewers flying high in the division only for Tom Elliott to chip in with a couple of goals to help Cambridge climb the table.
Elliott now has four goals on the board and he’s a 6/1 chance to score first in this game, although Oxford have really steadied the ship in recent weeks, with Michael Appleton’s side having experienced just one defeat in the last six games.
Last weekend’s 1-0 win against Newport was achieved even with ten men for most of the second half against County and there are signs that Oxford will return home with at least a point from this match.
Oxford haven’t yet won away so the draw is the bet to have for what should be a tight encounter between sides who don’t have the winning habit and are set to cancel each other out.
