Brighton & Hove Albion v Sheffield Wednesday tips: Back Seagulls to soar to top of Championship tonight
Brighton can re-claim top-spot with a home win over Sheffield Wednesday this evening
January 18th, 2017
It looks increasingly likely that this season’s Championship title fight could go right to the wire. Newcastle United’s recent stumbles were taken advantage of by Brighton as they soared into pole position in the Championship, however their stay at the top was somewhat brief and following a 2-0 defeat to Preston North End in their last outing, they now sit second to the Magpies.
The Seagulls enjoy a game-in-hand over their main title rivals however and manager Chris Hughton will be looking to put this advantage to good use when his side welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the south coast tonight.
Brighton have been enjoying an excellent season so far and prior to their defeat at Deepdale they had embarked upon a six-match winning run in all competitions. The defeat to Preston ended an unbeaten run stretching back to September and we’re of the opinion that last weekend’s disappointing result was little more than a relatively minor blip in an otherwise impressive campaign.
They will be in for a very tough time when they face Sheffield Wednesday however, the Owls enjoying a decent season of their own. Carlos Carvalhal’s men suffered the agony of losing the Championship play-off final to Hull City at the end of last season and the Owls boss will be hopeful of going one better this time around. Indeed his side head into Friday’s clash with the Seagulls on the back of a six-match unbeaten run in the league and they should prove a tough obstacle for Brighton to overcome.
The owls can certainly pack a massive punch and given that they have found the net in ten of their previous eleven Championship games, we’ll be backing them to add to the scoreline on Friday evening. It is hard to ignore Brighton’s impressive home record however and with just one Championship defeat for the Seagulls on home turf since January 2016 we’ll be siding with Hughton’s men to seal the three points on Friday to soar back to the top of the Championship table.
