Borussia Monchengladbach v Manchester City tips: Double over Borussia for Citizens
A win tonight for Manchester City would be enough to see them into the last sixteen of the Champions League
November 23rd, 2016
Pep Guardiola enjoyed an excellent start at Manchester City following his arrival during the summer and the good times appear to have returned after a somewhat barren spell in which they stumbled in the Champions League with a 3-3 draw with Celtic and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona. Since then they have gone four games without defeat, this run including a 3-1 victory over Barcelona in their last European outing. As such they are now closing in on the last sixteen of the competition and a win tonight would secure their place in the knockout stage.
“It is a good step to say that once in our lives we played against the best team in the world and we beat them,” Guardiola said following the win over Barca. “We competed with Barcelona, but for now we did it in a different way. We played more long balls because we are still not ready to keep the ball and play like they do. They have been playing that way for 25 years. For us, it is three or four months we have been trying to play in a different style.”
Two points now separate City from Barcelona and whilst it is unlikely that they will close that gap given that the Catalans should overcome Celtic with relative ease in the other Group C match, Guardiola’s men should have little problem in sweeping past a Monchengladbach side which sit three points behind them in the group table and who they demolished 4-0 in their last meeting.
The Citizens may be the away side tonight but they are 4/5 odds-on favourites across the outright winner market and it isn’t hard to understand the reason why. Monchengladbach head into this match on the back of some dismal form with no wins in their last four outings. They have been dismal at home and we believe that City will be the latest side to leave Monchengladbach with the spoils in the bag.
Those looking for bigger odds on a City win should back Guardiola’s men to win with both teams scoring at 2/1 with Betway. The Citizens managed a clean sheet when winning 4-0 in the previous meeting between the sides but since then they have struggled to keep the goals out with just two clean sheets in their last twelve outings and with Monchengladbach scoring regularly at home, we expect goals to be flying in at both ends tonight with Over 2.5 goals also good value at 11/8 with Ladbrokes.
Sergio Aguero looks well priced on the first goalscorer market, the striker failing to find the net in his last three European outings but managing a hat-trick in the last match against the Bundesliga side in September. His season tally stands at eight in the Premier League and we expect him to make a return to Champions League goals by breaking the deadlock in tonight’s clash at 3/1 with Bet365.
