Manuel Pellegrini was left cursing his luck after Manchester City’s Champions League group included Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma, although the bottom line is that the champions of England should make it to the last sixteen with relative ease.

Avoid defeat on Wednesday night and there’s every chance that City can land top spot and avoid the sort of last sixteen tie that saw them exit the competition last season when Barcelona triumphed.

The good news for Pellegrini’s men ahead of this fixture is that the outstanding Arjen Robben is unlikely to feature after being sidelined with injury, while Holger Badstuber, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcantara, Rafinha, and Javi Martinez are also missing.

Therefore, we will pass up the chance to back Bayern Munich in this Champions League opener, with the German champions not yet pulling up any trees this season despite Robert Lewandowski having arrived from Borussia Dortmund.

Aside from the Pole, the team is largely the same as last season, with Manchester City hoping to get plenty of possession as they did at the Emirates when drawing 2-2 with Arsenal.

Samir Nasri might come into the team for the encounter although Martin Demichelis remains the central defender of choice alongside Vincent Kompany and the Argentine looks set to line up against his former club.

This is a class Manchester City side and betfair’s 9/2 about an away win at the Allianz Arena looks a tasty price, although a safer bet could be the 10/3 about a draw with bet365.

A point apiece would represent a decent result for both teams ahead of matches against Moscow and Rome, with Sergio Aguero in excellent form at this early juncture of the season, while Edin Dzeko might also feature in attack.

Odds of 8/1 are available about a 1-1 scoreline and that looks about right considering that City will be looking to keep things tight and exploit things on the counter-attack.
