Dick Advocate remains in the hot-seat at the Stadium of Light, although failure to clinch a Premier League win at the fourth time of asking will make things increasingly uncomfortable for the Dutchman.

It has been a rather torrid season for the Black Cats so far. Their 6-3 win over League Two side Exeter City in the League Cup aside, things have been far from rosy at the Stadium of Light. Advocaat may have kept the club in the top flight for another season, however judging by performances so far they look set to endure another season-long relegation fight.

Are we being a little unfair here? After all, we are only three games into the new season. Nevertheless the results speak for themselves and if Sunderland continue to fail against teams such as Leicester City and newly-promoted Norwich City, then they will surely struggle against the bigger teams in the division.

A 4-2 defeat to an impressive Leicester on the opening day of the season was more a reflection of the Foxes’ excellent performance than Sunderland’s lacking in any area, however they were outclassed by the Canaries the following weekend and the improvement seen against Swansea City in their latest outing must be built upon should they wish to climb off the foot of the Premier League table.

Aston Villa at least have a victory to their name, opening their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over newly-promoted Bournemouth, however a losing streak has seen them lose to Manchester United ( 1-0 ) as well as Crystal Palace ( 2-1 ) and Tim Sherwood will see the visit of Sunderland as a chance to go back into the win column.

This won’t be an attractive game by any means and we’ll be backing a narrow win for Aston Villa. Dick Advocaat’s side need more consistency at both ends and must perform with a sense of urgency which is currently absent, however despite a slight improvement in defence against Swansea last weekend they will return home on Saturday with nothing to show for their troubles apart from a consolation goal perhaps.
