Aston Villa v Birmingham City Tips – Hosts will secure local bragging rights
A place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup beckons for Aston Villa
September 22nd, 2015
This match will provide Villa with a welcome distraction from their Premier League struggles, however we expect that boss Tim Sherwood would have preferred a more low-key tie tonight, given their troubles in the top flight at the moment.
It has certainly been a disappointing campaign so far for Villa with just a single victory from their opening six Premier League games, although there have been signs that plenty is still to come from Sherwood’s men.
They fought back to lead 2-1 against Sunderland a fortnight ago, only to let the Black Cats into the game and ultimately force a 2-2 draw. The Villans looked pretty impressive the following week when they stormed their way to a 2-0 lead against Leicester, however with just eighteen minutes left on the clock they capitulated in style and left the East Midlands on the receiving end of a 3-2 defeat.
Another Midlands rival put them to the sword on Saturday afternoon as West Brom left Villa Park with a 1-0 win and Sherwood is in no doubt that he has a tough task ahead of him should he wish to lift his side clear of the relegation zone at the end of the season.
All that can be put to one side for now however and the visit of Birmingham City tonight in the Capital One Cup could provide the win which could kick-start Villa’s season.
Gary Rowett has done a fine job at St Andrews following his appointment as Birmingham manager last year and his Blues side have enjoyed a decent start to their Championship campaign with three wins and three draws from their opening six outings. Their first defeat of the season came last Tuesday with Nottingham Forest beating them 1-0, however they followed that with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Ipswich on Friday evening.
Indeed, the Birmingham fans will be fully aware of Villa’s struggles and would dearly love to add to those woes with a win at Villa Park tonight, however we feel that the hosts will have too much for the Championship side and will be fancied to go through to the next round of the competition.
