Arsenal v Southampton tips: EFL Cup semi-final spot awaits Gunners
A place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup is at stake when Arsenal entertain Southampton on Wednesday evening
November 28th, 2016
Arsenal’s start to the current season was far from impressive with a solitary point earned in their opening two games as the Gunners followed an opening-day defeat at home to Liverpool with a draw at Leicester City. Boss Arsene Wenger had been the focus of the supporters’ anger in 2015/16 and things were looking ominous as the new campaign kicked off.
Fortunately for Wenger his side bounced back from these early-season jitters and some excellent performances have propelled the north Londoners into the Premier League top-four. Indeed, things are now looking pretty rosy at the Emirates with Arsenal within spitting distance of the Champions League last sixteen and closing in on the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.
It is the latter competition which comes under the spotlight on Wednesday evening when the Gunners welcome Southampton to the Emirates Stadium and the hosts will certainly be confident of making a better job of this tournament than they managed last season when they were sent packing by Sheffield Wednesday.
Wenger’s men have swept past Nottingham Forest and Reading on their way to the last eight and they will be brimming with confidence when they go head-to-head with a Saints side which are still searching for their first piece of silverware since the 1976 FA Cup. Southampton had to overcome Premier League opposition in the form of Crystal Palace and Sunderland to set them up with this date at the Emirates, although on this occasion we expect them to become unstuck.
Unsurprisingly the hosts are odds-on favourites at 5/6 to win in ninety minutes, given that they have won four of their last six meetings with Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. We believe that they will make it five from seven on Wednesday evening with Frenchman Olivier Giroud likely to make his mark at some point. Giroud has been having few problems in front of goal of late and found the net in recent outings against Manchester United and PSG, therefore at odds of 4/1 he looks a particularly solid bet on the Anytime Goalscorer market on Wednesday evening.
