Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal can be Premier League title contenders this season, with the Spaniard being announced as the new club captain in the wake of Thomas Vermaelen leaving for Barcelona.
Arteta said: “For me the league is very, very important.
“It shows the consistency of the team, the club and the good performance of the players.
“It is a title I would love to win and considering how tough this year is going to be it would be even more special so that’s the main target, in my opinion.
“Obviously the Champions League is a very special one and the cups are important.
“But the domestic league shows where you on a weekly basis.”
Arsenal are predictably hot favourites to beat Palace on Saturday evening although rather than back the Gunners at short odds to claim victory, there could instead be some merit in the even money about them winning without conceding a goal.
Wenger’s team won this fixture 2-0 last season thanks to a brace from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and should pose a threat this time around, with Alexis Sanchez having been added to the attacking ranks.
Palace have been relatively quiet in the transfer market although the signing of Brede Hangeland should make the defence relatively stout, even if they are short of firepower in attack.
