Arsenal v Chelsea tips: Back Blues to avoid defeat at the Emirates
Can Arsenal maintain their momentum when Chelsea come to town on Saturday?
September 22nd, 2016
To say that the Gunners kicked off their 2016/17 campaign in dismal fashion would be an understatement, however despite taking just a single point from their opening two matches they have nevertheless managed to climb up to fourth in the Premier League, their catalyst proving to be the 3-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road on match-day three. Throw in a 2-1 victory over Southampton and a 4-1 win away to Hull City and suddenly you have an Arsenal side which look like genuine title contenders.
Following the win at the KC Stadium, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was full of praise for the manner in which his side wrapped up the three points as well as making it clear that his side aren’t just there purely for the ride.
“This is a statement victory,” he said to reporters. “We scored three at Watford, we scored four against Hull. We played 0-0 at Leicester, but we had two or three opportunities. “Away from home we look more convincing at the moment than at home. When we lost our first game [against Liverpool], it was a mental shock for us and for our supporters. Straight away you have a little bit of scepticism… hopefully now we can have the same quality at home.”
That same quality will be demanded when Chelsea make the short journey to the Emirates Stadium this weekend, however will Wenger manage to steer his side to another three points. The Gunners stumbled early in their campaign but Chelsea had few such problems with wins in their first three Premier League games. Nevertheless Conte’s men drew against Swansea City and suffered defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge and as such they will be determined to return to winning ways on Saturday against a Gunners side which have a habit of self-destructing at times.
Looking at recent meetings between these sides, one has to favour the visitors on this occasion. Historically Chelsea certainly have the upper hand in this fixture and we see no reason to believe that this will be any different this time around. The Blues start as outsiders but with just a single defeat to their name in the last sixteen games against Arsenal, we’ll be backing Conte’s men to avoid defeat this weekend.
Looking at the Gunners’ recent results, their 4-1 win at Hull City may look good on paper but it was a far-from-convincing display from Wenger’s side and they will certainly struggle against Chelsea this weekend.
Looking at goalscorers, Diego Costa isn’t a popular figure amongst Gunners fans and he will thrive in the hostile atmosphere of the Emirates on Saturday, therefore we have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him on the Anytime Goalscorer market.
