Aberdeen v Ventspils tips – Dons to keep clean-sheet in Europa League qualifier
Aberdeen are in Europa League qualifying action tonight when they go head-to-head with Latvian outfit Ventspils at Pittodrie.
July 14th, 2016
Aberdeen must be getting used to starting their season in late June or early July, given that this is the third time in successive seasons that they have reached the qualification stages of European competition.
They triumphed in their opening qualifying games in the last two campaigns, failing to reach the competition proper through defeats to Real Sociedad in 2014 and Kazakhstan outfit Kairat Almaty last season.
Will it be third time lucky for Aberdeen tonight or will they suffer more European heartache. Luxembourg team Fola Esch have already been eliminated at the hands of the Dons, Derek McInnes’ side winning 3-1 at home but suffering a 1-0 defeat in Luxembourg, this disappointing result prompting McInnes to say: “Everything we were last week in terms of being composed, determined, confident and energetic was lacking from the performance.”
Ventspils have won the Latvian league six times during the past ten years and they swept past Faroese side Vikingur 2-0 in the previous qualifier. Aberdeen were only a solitary goal away from being dumped out of the competition and the Dons boss will demand a more clinical approach from the side tonight.
The Dons made an impressive return to the Europa League when they beat Latvian outfit Daugava Riga 8-0 over two legs, however whilst we don’t anticipate a repeat of this sort of scoreline in this fixture, we do expect a relatively routine home win for McInnes’ men. As such, we’ll be backing Aberdeen to win-to-nil at odds of 6/4 with BetVictor.
